FW 74 "M"

Fighter Wing 74 is stationed at Neuburg AB near Neuburg at the Danube River in Bavaria. At the anniversary of the death of Colonel Werner Mölders, a famous Fighter Ace of WW II, the wing was awarded its heritage name “Mölders” in 1973. This was revoked by Parliament decision in 2005.

The F-4F was flown at Neuburg from 1974 until 2008.

While simultaneously replacing the F-104G Starfighter, the wing was equipped with before, the F-4F era started at Neuburg on September 26th, 1974.
In order to utilize a wider range of the manifold combat capabilities of the Phantom and within the sense of flexible and focused use of airpower the Fighter Wing, until the end of cold war and against heavy opposition of the flying crews, was also ordered and equipped to serve Fighter Bomber Tasks.
After a longer period of parallel flight operation with the newly assigned Eurofighter “Typhoon” the Phantom-era ended at Neuburg in 2008.
Meanwhile the wing was renamed Taktisches Luftwaffengeschwader 74 or Tactical Air Force Wing 74.
