The Reconnaissance Wing 51 "Immelmann" (RW 51 "I") was stationed at Bremgarten AB, in the Rhine valley near Freiburg in southern Germany. The wing was awarded its heritage name "Immelmann" in 1961. It memorizes Max Immelmann, a famous WW I ace who invented the “Immelman Turn”, a standard flight maneuver even today flown by military and aerobatic pilots around the world.
The RF-4E Phantom was flown at Bremgarten AB from1971 until 1993.
